The lives of three women—Ruth, Isabella, and Bridget—from three very diverse backgrounds (West Virginia, Italy, and Ireland) are destined to converge in New York. All three personalities, the products of their torturous pasts, will realize the culmination of their existences. The author, Donna Kendall, has managed to avoid the clichéd happy ending and reminds us that life is what it is—a mixed bag of sadness and happiness—often with the scale tipped towards the former. Yet, as the title Sailing on an Ocean of Tears implies, the tears borne of our sadness carry us along on our journey to our destination.

Bravissimo! The author has managed to take what could have been merely a guilty pleasure and turned it into a thought-provoking novel. I’m reminded of the Nietzsche quote, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” It’s the only explanation I can find for the fortitude the three heroines summon up to survive their trials, tribulations, and heartaches. So many times in this book, I felt as if my own heart would break for these women. Even so, this story rises above the average tearjerker to raise powerful questions about life. Do we forge our lives based upon the choices we make, or are we tiny pieces of a universal jigsaw puzzle that fall predestined into place? Are accidental encounters truly accidental, or do people come into our lives for a reason? For that matter, does everything happen for a reason? Fate? Destiny? Serendipity? Karma? Call it what you will, readers will find themselves taking a closer look at their own lives and their relationships. Whether you are looking for an interesting read on a rainy afternoon or a novel to stimulate discussion in your reading group, I would highly recommend this book.
