Young Josh Wagner and Ellen Lebouef had been totally in love. After a few romantic days in New Orleans, they decided to get a tattoo on their upper, inner thigh so they would always remember it. Josh's family had money and Ellen's did not. Ellen had hopes of going to nursing school someday though and making something of herself. Josh was in college and would follow his father's footsteps. The two planned to marry someday soon. However, Josh's father, Matt, took it upon himself to step in. Matt did not care for Ellen's family, even though Ellen was a perfect young lady. Believing he was doing something his son would thank him for someday, Matt and his best friend, Jim Coriell, interfered.
When Josh learned that Ellen had disappeared and did not want Josh to know why or where she went, he immediately confronted his father. But Matt and Jim convinced Josh that they had nothing to do with it. Heartbroken, Josh entered the willing arms of Jim's daughter, Kristin. When they wed, Matt and Jim were thrilled! The two best friends and business partners were now brother-in-laws. Better still, Josh's best friend was Blake who was Kristin's brother. So those two best friends also became brothers! (Sounds like a juicy soap opera doesn't it?)
Now to make the plot even better. Only Kristin and her mother knew the deep secret concerning the twins. Kristin had purposely let Josh think she was pregnant by him, thus the marriage. However, someone else fathered the twin girls. That secret would hold until the girls were almost adults. From there on, things get even more interesting! Do not think that Ellen is out of the picture for good and expect quite a few more surprises. But that is all the synopsis that I dare give.
**** Author Morris L. Striplin has done and excellent job in creating a fascinating story set in Backwater, Louisiana. Men, do not go thinking this is soap opera junk. It just has a lot of twists and turns like a good soap or drama movie has. But no rednecks, no kissing cousins, no JUNK. Both men and women will LOVE this tale. The ending is especially satisfying! Morris L. Striplin has made a fan with me and I look forward to his next stunning release. ****..

Mr. Harrington's, First Bite, is an intriquing collection of short stories I enjoyed reading very much. His writing style is very poetic in some cases and very much in the era the stories take place. I especially enjoyed Spider Moran and Madame Bey, and The Lucifer Chronicles...

John Harrington Burns returns! After he wrote HIDDEN TREASURES, he wrote FIRST BITE. More short stories, one year later. The man is compelled to tell his stories. I'm glad that he is.
You know my story. At age 36, I decided to dust off the old dream and draw on my experiences, and I whipped out four books. Burns waited until he was over 70 to begin, so it's no wonder he wrote more than one book and is still writing them.
In FIRST BITE, Burns stretches his limits yet again to create an eminently satisfying read. Moving stories of human tragedy and triumph. A fine sense of humor and a subtle wit. Ventures into the supernatural, science fiction and mythology. His story-telling hand grows surer with each book, and he's told me more are on the way. I'm not at all surprised, and I'm thrilled to hear it. He's a rising star in short story writing, and he only gets better with each book.
And, to carry on with what I said in my previous review, you'll find more ideas in these two short story collections than you'll find in the careers of many novelists. Burns can give you an entire world in a few broad strokes and then move on before the paint is dry...

![Hunters of the Shadows [book] Hunters of the Shadows [book]](images/9781591460572-small.jpg) |
Mark Haeuser takes his training as a police officer, Swat team sniper, and martial arts expert and turns it into a very exciting read. HUNTERS OF THE SHADOWS is about a group of vampire hunters who literally decimate hundreds of evil vampires and their human minions to save a young girl and prevent the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy.
Creed is a thousand year old Gypsy prince, his life extend by gypsy magic so that he might fight the undead. For hundreds of years he has fought alone, but in this battle he won't be alone. Selma is a gypsy witch, destined to be his mate and to bear the next prince, if she survives. Jake is a martial arts expert and weapon collector who becomes caught up in vampire hunting when he buys the wrong, or rather the right weapon, a magical sword that turns him into a Vampire hunter. Then there is Taz, the alley cat, a cat but not just any cat, but one of the ancient Trillii warrior princes, who from the time of the Pharaohs have protected mankind from the undead. Then there is Father Joe,
not your ordinary Catholic priest, but trained in exorcism and other means for dealing with Satan's minions.
And perhaps the oddest ally, Creed's long time enemy, Lord Rasmere, a 2000-year-old True Blood vampire, who chooses to fight with Creed against the upstart Vampire lord Pakur, the new breed of turned, not born vampires, who seek to destroy the old order and take over power of not only the vampires, but the whole world.
This book is non-stop action. It reminded me of CAIN by James Byron Huggins, another action / adventure story with lots and lots of fighting as the heros struggle to save the world from Satan's power. What made this book for me was the richness of detail. Not just the fight sequences, although they are very detailed and I am sure accurate. You certainly could picture the action. But the backgrounds of the characters, their history,
their lives, and the use of legends. The characters are well defined and different from each other. Jake is a wise-cracking modern man, Rasmere a likeable bad guy, Taz, definitely the arrogant cat, and Creed is just tortured enough. It is in fact loaded with interesting characters, men, ghosts, and demons.
Tthe writing is vivid and well done. I enjoyed Hunters of the Shadows...

Hunters of the Shadows is a definite read book! It is well written, has lots of action, interesting characters (like a cat who talks), and keeps you hanging on to the end of the book. Having read an earlier book of Mark's I was not sure what this one would provide. I was wonderfully surprised! I loved it and you will too! I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for his next book!..

I remember when I was a 10 year old and would go with friends to the local theater to see Count Dracula, played by Bela Lagosi, suck the blood out of his victims. When the movie was over, I had to walk three blocks alone (after I got off the bus) to my home on an unlit street. My run quickly turned into a fast jaunt because I just knew the Vampire was going to get me. When I read Hunters of the Shadows, even though I know longer have a fear of Vampires, the old childhood memories surfaced.
The descriptive by the author is so real that at every little sound in your home may cause you to look over your shoulder. Darius Creed is the Vampire hunter, who with his Love Selena hunts down and kills vampires. I really do not want to say more, because words alone cannot give you the impact that reading this book will.
For those that love fantasy with a mixture of horror, then this is your kind of book. The Gypsies, witches and vampires are intermingled with each other so well that you can hardly wait to turn to the next page. The use of the cat was unique. I loved it.
This book proves once again that good overcomes evil - or does it? I am not a fantasy or horror fan, but this book by Mr. Haeuser grabbed me and held me to the exciting climax. If you want a book that will leave you in a cold sweat, then be sure to get your copy of 'Hunters of the Shadows.'
What a movie this would make. Bravo!..

For as long as there have been men, there have been creatures who prey on them, vampires, werewolves and others of that ilk.
Darius Creed is a Hunter, a special breed of human charged with the protection of all humans from the darkness lurking everywhere. He is long-lived and comes from a long line of Gypsy Royalty.
In modern times, most humans have forgotten the old lore, how to protect themselves against the darkness, all those except the Gypsy people who follow the old ways. Hunters in modern times are hard to come by, but they are needed, for a great battle is about to commence and only the Hunters can stop the powers of Darkness from attempting the Dolmage - Armageddon...
This book had a bit of everything, romance, adventure, mystery, horror, action, it was a difficult book to put down. As I was about half way through, I was thinking to myself, "I wish Selena (Creed's lover) was more involved in the story," and shortly thereafter, my wish was granted, although not in the way I expected! Selena is pivotal to the plot, even though she is not involved so much in the action.
My one niggle, and it is a niggle, although the story more than makes up for it, is that the layout of the book was a little odd. There were no spaces or indents between paragraphs. I'm not sure if that's the way the author meant it to be, or if it was a mistake at the printers.
Even with that, it's a good book and an interesting read if you like vampire stories with a bit of magic and romance thrown in...
