Monkey Pudding (2nd Edition) [book] by GARY BLINCO Date Added: Sunday 07 September, 2008
Monkey Pudding (2nd Edition) [book] Monkey Pudding is sparsely written but in a powerful style that allows the strong dialogue to carry the story along at a fast pace. As a Vietnam Veteran and author of two books about that war I could relate to the state of mind of the key characters in the book - well done. Gary Blinco - Author of The Mystical Swagman..

Scattered Leaves [book] by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson (ReaderViews) Date Added: Wednesday 20 August, 2008
Scattered Leaves [book] Following a spectacular explosion on a drilling rig, from which he escaped unscathed, Ben McCord returns home only to find his beloved wife June brutally raped and murdered. The main suspect at first, he is cleared of any suspicion after the police verified his presence at the explosion site, yet he quickly nearly becomes the next victim. After several more direct attacks on his life it becomes abundantly clear that somebody is out to get him. Ben rapidly discovers that this somebody is obviously a government agent, but the motives remain unclear. He decides to pursue justice on his own, wanting to avenge June’s death and if possible, stay alive in the process. The following events develop briskly, and Ben is soon thrown together with another victim of the same gang, a young dentist, nicknamed PJ. Although it’s been only a few short days since his wife’s death, it is obvious that Ben immediately becomes preoccupied with PJ and his quest for his wife's murderer really becomes secondary. He is much more focused on staying with PJ and helping her avenge the terrible fate she suffered at the hands of this unsavory bunch. Will they succeed and will the mystery of June’s killer ever be revealed? There is absolutely no doubt that Richard E. Roach can write. His prose hits you right in the stomach, and it hits hard. I felt totally desensitized. The violence never stopped. The main story, the one of June’s murder and Ben’s quest for vengeance, was graphic. When PJ entered the story, the description of what happened to her at the hands of the sleazy guys was vivid. The addition of several scenes from her past, involving ongoing sexual abuse as a child by a family member, pushed me over the edge. Yet the violence never stopped. There was much more to come, from castrations to recounting of news stories involving different horrible crimes, other rapes, even one of a child, marital rape and more. Although this is all probably very close to the realities of today’s world, the reader needs to be warned of the content. And while we all mourn in different ways, I found it disturbing that one would remarry so quickly after the death of a beloved spouse who died in such a violent way. Undoubtedly well written, “Scattered Leaves” by Richard E. Roach is a book I would recommend to anybody who loves scenes of death, destruction, violation and obliteration...

The Mystical Swagman [book] by GARY BLINCO Date Added: Saturday 16 August, 2008
The Mystical Swagman [book] REVIEW OF The Mystical Swagman by Gary Blinco. I have had the privilege of reading both the previous edition and the present one of The Mystical Swagman and have found each of them intriguing reading. The new edition is a much longer story as one is taken through many stages of the The Mystical Swagman’s life and adventures. This book is a reasonably new genre for Gary Blinco but he certainly does justice to the mystical genre allowing his imagination to know no bounds. One is immediately transported into the Australian Outback and at times one can be convinced there is even the faintest hint of a eucalyptus perfume permeating the pages of the book. That is how realistic the tale becomes. The Mystical Swagman follows the experiences of Brennan, an orphan boy of mysterious origins who develops mystical powers while tramping the wallaby track with two old swagmen. When Brennan discovers he is the product of a white witch and a sorcerer he uncovers many of his mystical gifts as he matures. This brings him to a myriad of experiences most of which he is unable to explain to his travelling companions. As Brennan reaches adulthood and eventually decides to travel alone the reader experiences every emotion with him and the only regret is when one reaches the end of this exciting and endearing tale. The story lends itself to a series as I’m sure there are more adventures to be experienced for the loveable Mystical Swagman. Wingtips with Spurs [book] by Anonymous (Accounting Manager) Date Added: Tuesday 12 August, 2008
Wingtips with Spurs [book] As an Accounting Manager in the business world, I work with and through people in reaching our goals. I have read many 'management' type books but this is the first time I've felt the need to write a review. In a time filled with management fads and ethical missteps, I am continually searching for guidance to determine the best decision to make for myself and others in the company. After reading Wingtips with Spurs, I can sum up this review in one word: Amazing. This book serves up straight forward, practical advice making for refreshing and insightful reading. Using original thinking based on the reflections of the author's work and life, it delivers real world answers to difficult problems. If you are like most managers and leaders, your objective is to be the very best at what you do. Whether you define your goals as dealing with problems or as creating greater opportunities for yourself and others, this book delivers the answers we have been asking. I understand from the publisher that this is the first in a series of 'Lessons From the Ranch' books. I am looking forward to the new releases...

Wingtips with Spurs [book] by Terry Barnhill Date Added: Tuesday 12 August, 2008
Wingtips with Spurs [book] Having spent over 25 years in Human Resources as an HR Director with Fortune 500 companies, I have read a lot of management books on managing people over the years. Most contained valuable information and insight but were written in a style that tended to put you to sleep after the first few pages. I received Wingtips with Spurs a few days ago and have to admit it's one of the most enjoyable, refreshing, down to earth books on people management I have ever read. It's a virtual encyclopedia of information on a host of issues that we have all dealt with not only in the business world but everyday life as well. It blends wit and humor (Cowboy Wisdom) into real life situations that keeps you turning the pages. The author has an uncanny knack for getting to the core of an issue and then providing his own unique insight from his experiences professionally and from life on the ranch. You may not agree with everything the author has to say regarding a particular subject but I will wager you will thoroughly enjoy your journey through this book. I certainly did. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who manages people at any level of an organization but it would be on my list as a must read for anyone new or just getting started in management. If you're an HR Director, you should buy copies for your management team. You will not be disappointed...

Consider it Done! [book] by Tammy Petty Conrad (Reader Views) Date Added: Thursday 31 July, 2008
Consider it Done! [book] This quick read might just give you the kick start most of us need to turn things around. People who are ready to make a change don’t have a lot of time or the patience to read through lengthy chapters to find a bit of wisdom that might be useful. The author easily sums up concepts while inspiring readers to take action on the variety of Behavior Change Projects that we are interested in. He discusses two types. Linear projects consist of tasks such as finishing a degree, learning a new skill and others that include a beginning, middle and end. Habit change projects are different in that the goal is to develop a new model of behavior. These can include handling paperwork timely, exercising regularly or managing your health. I was happy to accomplish my first goal of completing the book in a weekend. And I came away from it inspired to meet my other goals. Like many others, I go through periods of procrastination and incomplete projects, frustrated by my failures. But Hibbs provides a process and a plan to follow. He comes with a great amount of experience as a teacher, psychologist and a personal coach. He knows from experience that part of being successful is committing in writing what your plan is and then following up on it. As far as scheduling goes, he uses the example of filling a bucket with rocks, sand and pebbles to illustrate our priorities. I’ve actually used this in a training class and I enjoyed being reminded of its truth. We all know we need to do what’s important, but we tend to get sucked into the priorities of others. At least I do! Next he discusses motivation. Reminding ourselves of the benefits of completing a project is important and more meaningful than just saying we have to do it. Sure my closet was an overwhelming mess and anyone would say it needed to be cleaned out. But once I realized the benefit of having access to clothes I’d forgotten I had, I got busy and made it happen. Hibbs addresses what to do when you hit a brick wall or your ‘gremlin,’ as he calls it, starts talking you out of something. There are several strategies he suggests to incorporate from positive self-talk to deep breathing and others. It is important to address the rationale of why we don’t get these things done in the first place. There is a good reason our garages pile up or the bills go unpaid or thank-you cards never get written. This book helps us addresses why our gremlin appears and what to do about it...

Get Your Career on the Fast Track [book] by Midwest Book Review (Paige Lovitt) Date Added: Monday 28 July, 2008
Get Your Career on the Fast Track [book] I am really impressed with "Get Your Career on the Fast Track: A Navigational Guide for the Modern Manager." I have a Masters of Science degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling and can say that I have never, ever seen a more concise book on helping people with their careers. The author, Michelle Casto, PhD, designed this book to empower the reader to use "self-awareness, active reflection, and intuitive guidance," in the career decision-making process. These aren't tools that we are all naturally gifted with, so she shows us how to learn about ourselves so that we can develop them. This involves reading, completing assignments and journaling. In addition to providing a great deal of self-reflection, the activities and journal assignments are fun to do. Everything that you need is in this book. The typical books that help you find jobs tend to simply address the steps of finding a job. They offer interviewing tips and resume samples. Casto takes you beyond that and teaches you how to find a fulfilling career. This is perfect for both people who are starting out and for people who are looking for a change in employment. There is not one area of work that is not covered in this book. Casto describes the different types of people that you might either be working with or be getting interviewed by. She also defines the different types of work environments out there. "Get Your Career on the Fast Track" should be required reading for college students. It would be an excellent textbook for personal-development courses. I really enjoyed reading it. Unless you are retired and have no plans to do anything, I highly recommend this book for everyone. It would make the perfect graduation gift...

Clavis [book] by Erin Aislinn, Book Cover of the Week Awards Date Added: Thursday 12 June, 2008
Clavis [book] Book Cover of the Week Award Winner! ---------------------------------------------- &-
quot; For a person who loves Classical Greece and Rome as much as I do, I can't believe it's taken so long to come across a book cover that captures the spirit of that time. Once I saw this design by cover artist Troy O'Brien for author Edward O'Toole's Clavis, I had to feature it. The subtitle "A Will of Iron...A Soul to Lead" stirs plenty of curiosity given the image between the two axes features a woman." - Erin Aislinn, Judge of the Book Cover of the Week Award..
