ONE Memoir of a manic addict... I couldn't put it down until I had read all of it. Jennifer Marks says it all about the "Manic" state associated with Bipolar Disorder. I found myself inside her head. She shares what will possibly be the most pivotal period of her life.
Her diagnosis affected her tie to her family and her support system, mainly her father. She was blinded and afraid she would never be accepted and loved unconditionally again. Her family was proud of her achievements and her artistic gift. But they couldn't grasp her diagnosis and mental health issues. It was unacceptable.
Jennifer's need to please her parents by being thin and pretty led her to anorexia and bulimia at a young age. Feeling unworthy and ugly she also experiments with drugs. The drugs take her to a place called "comfort and peace".
She attempted to make a respectable stab at marriage. She found her husband to be controlling and judgmental. Her diagnosis of a sometimes fatal disease prevented her from having children and a myriad of other issues the marriage dissipates within a year.
A treatment/rehabilitation program brought her and a stranger together. She opened herself and her life to him. Together they lost total control of their lives in a very short time. Drugs and being together became their purpose to live. Lies, drugs, and lies and drugs was the only commonality. Drugs, deceit, stealing, and hours and days and minutes of sex became their lifeline.
Soon reality rears it's ugly head and Jennifer starts to regret her choice to be with this volatile, unpredictable shell of a man. She desires to get well and she loses all her material possessions. But her drive to get back her relationships with family and friends becomes her focus.
Does Bipolar disorder cause addictions? Something to consider.

"One: Memoir of a Manic Addict" is raw, real, and a rare glimpse into the mind of one who pulled through a hell most who tumble into get burned in. As I turned each page I often caught myself thinking, "What in the hell are you doing?" Then came to the realization that she was existing in her own reality that was not the reality most exist in, so what she was thinking and doing made perfect sense to her. What a difficult task those who are mentally ill face when battling inner demons.
The courage Jennifer Marks must have to have created this emotional roller coaster ride of her life titled "One" is, in my opinion, the one trait that saved her life. Without this courage I truly feel she would not have been able to share her story with us because she would not be alive to tell it. The more she tumbled into the world of alcohol and drugs gripped in mental illness, the more distorted her life became.
Although each reader will be envious of the sex marathons, I sure know I was, and the spending marathons, we are equipped with sense and limits when she was not. We are equipped with the ability to make decisions and not put our own personal welfare in jeopardy, she was not. We are equipped with the knowledge that when you scheme and deceive at some point what you have created will tumble around you. It was in the mist of the walls shattering around her that Jennifer dug out of her somewhat self-inflicted hell.
Traveling through these pages you will get mad at the spoiled-little-rich-girl who had it all. She led a seemingly ideal life with way more than most people even dream of. How could she let this happen? As you read from her distorted point of view you see how the tornado takes hold and she only has rare glimpses of life as it should be. I am glad she, with the help of her loving but sometime enabling family, was able to stop her storm.
Many would benefit from reading "One: Memoir of a Manic Addict" by Jennifer Marks. It gives knowledge for those who have loved ones going through their own hell. It can be a deterrent for those who are testing the waters with alcohol and drugs and encouragement for those who feel there is no hope.

Very Facinating... hard to put down. Takes you in and out of her reality. I could feel her slipping then fighting to get out, its a miracle she survived it all. A great read for those who dabbled and those who chose not to... a must read for those with teenagers and especially for teenagers!

I loved this book! I know the author personally and I really felt her pain as she described going thru a downward spiral on a rollercoaster of drugs and addiction and finally freedom. A great, great read. Some of the parts just made me say \"Oh my God!\" and I am so glad she alive today to share her journey with us all. Hopefully it hits someone at home and saves a life or two.
