About the Author

Tom Nelson has made the rural landscape of central Ohio his home for the past thirty years. There he pursues his three passions: tennis, horses, and writing. Tom has been teaching and coaching tennis for nearly four decades in addition to writing articles for professional journals, and conducting seminars and workshops for other individuals who teach tennis. His interest in horses has endured for just as long. He bought his first horse while still in college and has owned horses continuously since, including several tries at training and driving standardbred race horses. Fiction writing has come a little more recently, only occupying the last ten years. It started with a whim, the idea of writing a novel, and then gradually evolved into a passion. Tom says, “One thing that probably made me even more determined to see one of my novels in print was that everyone said that it was nearly impossible for a new fiction writer to get published.”

On the medieval genre he says, “The middle ages seem so remote and have so many myths and legends attached to them that it’s almost like they exist in a different dimension than the present day. But although it was a chaotic, lawless, and somewhat repressed period in Europe, the people that lived it must have had the same human characteristics as us. They fell in love, raised their children, worked hard to scratch out a living in difficult times, and used their brains to solve problems.”

Always an avid reader, Tom counts among his favorite authors Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexandre Dumas, and James Fennimore Cooper. Among early twentieth century writers, he admires Earnest Hemingway, Zane Grey, and Louis Bromfield.
