Written by a senior manager at one of the big Indian outsourcing companies, "Managing Offshore Development Projects: An Agile Approach" explains how some Indian companies are managing the projects that Western organizations are sending offshore. More than just a fascinating glimpse into the exotic world of offshore outsourcing, the book is full of example templates, metrics, and reports that are used to control and govern these projects.
One of the interesting aspects of this book, is that it not only shows you how the Indian companies are managing the outsourced projects, but it also presents a case for agile methods being used to manage the relationship between the Western project sponsors and their Indian development partners. This is fascinating, as it highlights that the project sponsors could be using agile methods on their own to manage requirements, control the assignment of work packages (through iterations), and such to help better manage their risk when dealing with an unknown offshore provider.
This risk-minimizing aspect of agile is the key factor in these outsourced relationships. With time-zone differences, cultural differences, and the like, there are few opportunities to truly communicate in a collaborative fashion. The risk of the offshore service providers misunderstanding requirements and "getting it wrong" is generally high, but is markedly reduced through iterative processes where they have to come back and demonstrate their progress in short frequent intervals. This way, if they "get it wrong" then they have only strayed a little, minimizing the rework to correct issues.
This book is excellent for Western business sponsors, program managers, project managers, business analysts, solution architects, and technical leads who find themselves working with offshore providers. By better understanding how to manage the relationship (and how the providers are managing their own internal people) we can work more effectively together and improve the chances of project success.
