These short stories are truly "Hidden Treasures". Don't let, Bleeding Hearts & Lady's-Slippers, fool you. This is a chilling story with a chilling ending. Very enjoyable! Memoirs of a Cleavage Stuffer-what a job! This story transported me to another time, and I loved every minute of it. And my favorite, cause it's dear to my heart, The Monday Night Game, where not all is what it appears to be. Of course, there are more stories, all of them a fun read, but the above is just a sampling of what is behind half-closed doors, Hidden Treasures. Mr. Burns is a wonderful storyteller and I can't wait to read his next work, "First Bite."

From his short poems to his short stories, John Harrington Burns writes of a wide variety of characters and situations in Hidden Treasures. This collection includes stories that range from a young boy's time with his Italian grandfather to a young man's encounter with live television in the early 1950's. Mr. Burns' writing gets you involved, not knowing what twists will happen along the way. Very enjoyable and well written.

John Harrington Burns is a fine writer. His down-home humor,
and art of story telling is a joy to read. I have his book:
"Hidden Treasures," and I don't keep it hidden for long. It
is on my library shelf, within easy reach, to peruse again
and again.

I love a well-crafted short story collection where every story is written by the same author. But the only short story author I know of in traditional print who isn't an established novelist is Alice Munro. Traditional print seems to feel that first you build a following with novels, then embark on the riskier road of the short story anthology. I'd love for them to explain that to Aesop, O. Henry, and every other great short story author in between.
Epublishing is still willing to take a chance on the short story collection, which is one of the reasons I love epublishing. Without it, I wouldn't have discovered Dr. Bob Rich or Daisy Dexter Dobbs. Or, I'll admit, have been able to publish my own anthology.
John Harrington Burns began writing when he was in his seventies. This leads me to believe he lived his life as a human tape recorder, because he brings it all to life with his words. He has a knack for blurring the lines between fact and fiction. He writes stories that leave me clueless as to whether or not they really happened. Are they true, or is he just that convincing? That's not the real question. The real question is, does it matter? And the answer is, no it does not.
It requires a great deal of imagination to write a strong short story collection. A well-crafted novel will contain a large number of ideas, but a well-crafted short story collection will contain more. Each story should have its own characters, its own setting, its own something to make it unique. That's what I like about a powerful short story collection, such as this one.
It also requires a great deal of labor to make any piece of writing look like little labor was required. Burns obviously put in the hours. Many more hours to write this than to read it. I don't even want to know the ratio. But I certainly appreciate what Burns has given us.
Burns writes in many genres, from sentimental to frightening to showbiz behind the scenes. He won't hesitate to take a risk, to experiment, to try something he hasn't seen before. I admire that in any author. Especially in a first effort like HIDDEN TREASURES. And that is an appropriate title. There are a few in here. I thank the author for sharing them with me.
