Who can resist a good ghost story? Certainly not me. When I saw Carpathian Ghost Hunters, I just had to have a copy.

Carpathian Ghost Hunters examines a number of castles, ruins, monasteries, etc in Slovakia. For each entry, the author includes pictures, background information, a summary of the paranormal activity that is rumored to be in that area, and then the results of his own paranormal investigations. The architecture of these buildings, especially the castles is absolutely fantastic.

I have a lot of favorites from this book. The book includes an entry about the Blood Countess, Alzbeta Bathory who is said to be the worst serial murderess ever with 650+ kills to her name. There is also an entry about battlefield sounds that weren’t heard by investigators but were later discovered on an audio tape. If I had to choose though, I think my favorite would have to be the house that the author actually bought and lives in. To live each day knowing and seeing such sites in one’s own home seems both fascinating and chilling at the same time.

The Carpathian Ghost Hunter, by Edward O’Toole takes the reader on a journey into the land of the Blood Countess of Bathory and Vlad the Impaler.

I first heard the story of the Blood Countess in the early 1980’s in the form of a radio drama on the CBC. It is a chilling tale that one does not easily forget. I enjoyed Mr. O’Toole’s account of the Blood Countess of Bathory and his attempt to separate myth from reality.

Mr. O’Toole’s research into the folklore and history of over twenty possible haunted sites in the Carpathian region makes for an enjoyable read for the lover of the classic ghost story. His knowledge of the region, coupled with his passion for history, makes him an admirable tour guide into an otherwise mysterious and often misunderstood landscape.
