I thought at first that Don Pillittere’s book “Are We There Yet? Diary of a Project Manager” would be just another dry rehash of project management principles. As I read the ‘story’….his diary of the project, I became entranced. I felt as though I was part of the project! I became frustrated as I read on and I found myself replacing the fictional character names in the project story with the actual names and faces of the same types of individuals with whom I had dealt in my career role as a global project manager at GE and Motorola. My blood pressure rose and I could not put the book down!
Pillittere shows clearly the problems that Project Managers face in any large project and his weekly diary entries allow the reader to follow the project life cycle events almost as a team member. You see resistance from team members, manager’s failure to commit resources, delays that could have been avoided, the influence of corporate culture and fear of job loss by employees, a state of denial in the face of evidence, political influences and more. He weaves the reader through the project and you find yourself offering mental suggestions to help.
Any seasoned PM who has lead, or has been a core team member of a high value/critical visibility project will readily identify with this book. For less experienced PM’s who may not yet have tasted the high emotion roller coaster ride and challenges of a big project, you will learn a lot and start to become “project hardened’ yourself. You can become better prepared for the people, the unknowns, influence factors, risks, politics and inevitable challenges so aptly described in the project storyline.
Pillittere further offers solutions. His “4 P’s” of Project Management: Process, People, Parts and Phenomena are used in reflection to identify the common traits of projects. These are things that must be addressed by the project manager as s/he constructs the project roadmap and drives the project team and organization towards a successful arrival at project end.
And finally, Pillittere reminded me that humor is important for everyone and that despite the ‘roller coaster’ emotions you feel while on the ride….at the end, it is very rewarding! I highly recommend this engaging project diary.
